Last week, I introduced a new mox & fodder feature, “The Look for Less–Design Style.” My first feature was the Knoll Saarinen Executive Arm Chair. For my second installment, I am featuring the Spark Side Chair (2009). Designed by Don Chadwick for Knoll, this polypropylene chair retails for $171. The design is fun and playful, but is also very functional. It can be stacked up to 6 units high, making it easy to store. Overall, it is a well designed chair with a price tag that is not completely unreasonable, but is still out of reach for many.
One cost effective alternative is the Urban Chair from Ikea. It retails for a more modest price of $40. The shape is slightly different from the Spark Side Chair, but it has the same general style.
One thing I love about the Urban Chair is how versatile it is. It can be used as patio seating or dining chairs (see below). It can be stacked when not in use, and it is easy to clean. In my opinion there are few drawbacks to buying this chair, but I do realize that $40 is still a stretch for some people (me included). Luckily these chairs are in wide circulation so you can probably find a good deal on Craigslist or at your local thrift store.
I hope you are enjoying my new feature. Come back next week for another “The Look for Less–Design Style.”
