Joey and I have a lot of instruments, which is awesome, but presents a bit of a storage issue. The closet in our guest bedroom was filled with our collection. Whenever we had a guest visiting, I felt embarrassed that I couldn’t offer them anywhere to hang their clothes. So in an effort to free up some space, we decided to hang most of the stringed instruments on the wall in our living room.  Music_Wall1

It turned out to be pretty great idea, if I do say so myself, because the instruments look awesome. We also pulled out an old trunk from the closet to store some of our smaller instruments like our accordion, mini xylophone, kazoo, etc.  As an added bonus, the trunk acts as a side table for a small seating area. So now we have a mini dedicated music space complete with seats. It’s the perfect spot for a jam session.

We used a guitar hanging pack that I bought on Amazon to hang all the stringed instruments. It was fairly simple to install and is very sturdy. Even so, Joey refused to hang his prized 1972 Martin because he is worried about damage.  But that worked out fine because six instruments hanging is plenty.  We have an acoustic guitar, a tin can guitar (that Joey actually made), a banjo, two electric guitars, and an Appalachian dulcimer that belonged to my Granny.

On top of that, we are storing our tambourine, mini aluminum Darbuka drum, and ukulele in a wine crate that sits on top of the trunk.

I’m typically worried about cluttering up a space, so I was a little hesitant to put our instrument collection out in public; however, after living with it for a few weeks, I’m really happy with our decision.  It’s still organized enough that it’s not overwhelming and it added some personality to our space.
