I think I might have a board and batten addiction. Something about adding trim in a room gets me really excited. And after realizing how easy it was to install lattice board and batten in Florence’s bedroom, I’ve been considering it everywhere. I decided to start in our main bedroom because it’s always been a very blah shade of gray and I wanted to jazz it up. Initially, I thought I could just splash a fresh coat of paint on the walls, but the ceilings in there are so high, I’d have to rent a crane to get the job done (humble brag). So, I came up with a new plan! I added a white board and batten look on the bottom third of the walls.

And because I’m peak lazy, I ordered every single thing online from Home Depot and had it delivered right to my door. No need to bother with the hassle of dragging myself to the store and hauling all that trim back home. Genius, right?

For my vertical strips, I went with this PVC lattice that’s 5/32 in. x 1-1/8 in. I chose it because it’s so thin that I didn’t need to remove my baseboards. Wood would have been my top choice, but unfortunately, the delivery options were as scarce as my carpentry skills. So, I had to settle. For the top rail, I did something bold. I went with this gorgeous chair rail moulding that’s 1-3/8 in. x 1-3/4 in. Now, the embarrassing thing is, I didn’t even pay attention to what I was buying, and I thought it was wood. Joke’s on me, it’s actually made of this weird foam material called polyurethane. But, hey, it was super easy to cut, so I can’t complain. Plus, after a coat of paint, it looks just like wood! The jury is still out on how durable, but so far I’m into it.

Another fun DIY in here are the two sconces. I installed those myself, believe it or not. Yeah, you heard that right. I’m basically a self-taught electrician now (not really, but let me have my moment). Of course, I was a bit nervous about the whole electrocution situation, but nothing a few YouTube tutorials couldn’t solve. I watched so many videos that I felt like I was getting a degree in Electrical Engineering (minus the actual degree). And let me tell you, the most important thing I learned was to TRIPLE check that the electricity was off before getting started. Safety first, people!

Overall, I think our bedroom is looking pretty good. Here is a little before and after of the view you get when standing in our bathroom. The before is from the real estate listing.

And another fun before and after….

Now that I’ve got the trim bug, I’m considering doing some type of wall treatment in our kitchen and dining room. Maybe picture frame moulding? Stay tuned to see what I decide.
