I seriously can’t get enough house plants. It’s an obsession. The problem is that I didn’t really have anywhere to put all my plants, so I came up with a creative solution – a plant bench. In reality, it’s just a regular bench that could be used in the future for a different purpose, but for now, it’s a functional perch for my plants.
Since the space that I wanted the bench to sit has a narrow walkway, I couldn’t buy a pre-existing bench. Instead I had to design something custom made. I ended up buying the wood from Ballard Reuse, an architectural salvage shop in Seattle that I frequent on occasion. It was a steal at only $10. The only problem is that the wood wasn’t in the greatest shape and Joey was concerned about the possibility of splinters when our baby starts crawling/walking (#superdad). He tried sanding it, but it was still splinter city, so we decided to cover it in a very thick coat of epoxy resin. This was the most time consuming part of the project. We did two coats on each side and it takes FOREVER to dry. You also have to watch it very carefully while it dries and immediately blow out any potential air bubbles.
After it finally dried, we attached the legs. I went with the 1×1 Tube Legs from Hairpinlegs.com (cheesy website name, great prices). They were only $10 a piece, which was a steal based on some of the other options I saw online. All in all, the project took about two weekends to complete, with about 80% of the time spent on the epoxy coat.
I’m really happy with the end result and my plants are too. They now have a beautiful, custom made home.
