It is finally starting to feel like summer in Seattle, and I’ve decided to celebrate by getting my green thumb on.  (For the record, I have a history of killing plants, but that doesn’t mean I can’t keep trying. ) Today’s tutorial is how to make succulent planters from old mason jars.

I did some research, and I read that it is very important to fill the bottom of the jar with rocks.  This allows the water to drain properly.  Another suggestion was to put a layer of charcoal between the rocks and soil for absorption.  I purchased some succulents from Home Depot, placed them in the jars, and filled the jars with soil.  That’s it.  It was very simple, and I love how it looks.  The real test will be whether the succulents survive.  My bet is they won’t make it very long.  I’ve come to terms with the fact that I’ll never be a master gardener, but lets hope these babies make it at least a few weeks.

Well I’m off to buy some ice cream.  I’ve got to make the most of the warm weather while it lasts.  Have a good Sunday.
